Our History

1932

Easy Crust Launches A Movement.

The story began in 1932 when Rose Charters decided to tackle the challenge of making the perfect, easy-to-prepare pie crust. She called her product Krusteaz® pie crust (cleverly combining “crust” and “ease”). Rose and her husband James started selling the mix to friends, neighbors and local cafes. They quickly outgrew their home kitchen and soon opened the first manufacturing plant in Seattle. (Photo is a reenactment of Rose and her friends enjoying delicious pie).

1940

Just Add Water.

The spirit of innovation continued with the introduction of Krusteaz® “just add water” Pancake Mix. When this mix hit the shelves in the 1940s, most people didn’t even have a TV. It was mind-blowing, and it’s still one of our most popular products today.

1960

Pancakes on the road.

In the 60s era of flower power and “do your own thing”, we hit the road, except with pancakes instead of Beat poets. The Krusteaz® Old Fashioned Kurtesy Kitchen, a fully equipped “traveling diner,” served up free pancake breakfasts throughout the Northwest. The ice cream man could not compete.

1990

Hot From Ovens Everywhere.

As our product line expanded, so did our fan base. By the 90s we had spread beyond the Northwest so people everywhere could enjoy our biscuits, muffins, brownies, breads, desserts and more. From Army-base breakfasts to crews working on the Alaska pipeline, folks were now enjoying our hearty baked goods across the U.S.
