Add Toppings to Make Smiley Faces and More

The easiest way to turn your pancakes into art is to arrange fruit, nuts, and other toppings into fun shapes. Make a simple smiley face with a few carefully arranged blueberries. Arrange sliced strawberries around the edges of a pancake to make a flower. Slice a banana in half lengthwise and use the pieces to make bunny ears. Try making two smaller pancakes and use them as mouse ears on a regular pancake. The only limit is your imagination!

Use Silicone Pancake Molds for Fun Shapes

Make pancakes unique shapes with silicone pancake molds. You can find pancake molds in a variety of themes. They make for a fun breakfast for special occasions. How to use pancake molds:

  • Coat the griddle and silicone mold in cooking spray
  • Set the mold on the griddle
  • Pour the batter into the mold
  • Gently remove the mold
  • Flip the pancake to cook other side
  • And enjoy!

Make Pour Art Pancakes

One of the easiest and most popular ways to make a pour painting is to layer different colors of fluid paint into a cup and slowly pour the cup onto a canvas. This same technique can be used with pancake batter to make colorful galaxy-inspired pancakes.

Pick how many colors you’d liked to make, then divide the buttermilk pancake batter into mixing bowls. We recommend using 3-5 colors for this fun method. Add a few drops of food coloring or gel and gently stir. Layer the different colors of batter into a measuring cup.

Once your griddle is preheated, take the measuring cup and slowly pour the colorful batter onto the surface. Try moving your hand in a small circular motion and watch the colors swirl together. Once you see the bubbles forming, flip the pancake and cook the other side. Experiment with different colors and see what pour fun you can make.

Unleash Your Inner Picasso

Want to make pancake masterpieces? It’s easier than you think. All it takes is a little practice. And don’t worry—even your mistakes will be delicious! Divide your buttermilk pancake batter into food-safe squeeze bottles, add your preferred food coloring, and then shake the bottle until all the coloring is mixed. Once you have all your colors mixed, you’re ready to start drawing on the griddle.

Tips for Drawing Pancakes on a Griddle:

  • Keep your griddle off until you’re done drawing. This helps you avoid burning parts of the pancake before you’ve completed the drawing.
  • Draw the outlines first. For inspiration, try copying the outlines from a page in a coloring book.
  • Color in your design. Using the squeeze bottles, add different colored batter to your outlines.
  • Cover the entire design in plain batter. Once you’re done coloring in your drawing, add a layer of plain batter to ensure you make a light and fluffy pancake that’s ready to eat!
  • Cook on medium heat. If the griddle gets too hot, the pancake will turn brown. For pancake drawings, we recommend cooking on medium heat to ensure the colorful batter retains its vibrancy.
  • And flip! Once your batter starts to bubble, it’s time to flip your pancake and cook the other side.
  • Enjoy your edible work of art!
